Elliptical Constructions


1. Ellipsis is a kind of omission, which can be understood as neglected in Linguistics.

2. Sometimes it is generally known as it's informal name "dot dot dot" or "3 dots".
It is only depend upon author whether he want to use ellipse or not.

3. Symbol: "..."
   This method of presenting ellipse is called elliptical Construction. You can also show it without presenting in a sentence(by ignoring)

4. Etymology: Greek words means omission.

5. E.g. He likes her and she also.
 
Here, In this example, "She also" can be understood as complete but there is the presence of an ellipse in the sentence and that is " likes/loved". 

It is always hidden in a sentence but show its own meaning without its appearance. 

6. Types - 

 a) Gapping= Verb after Conjunction.
 b) Verb Phrase= omission of VP.
 c) Pseudogapping= only few amount of VP omission.
 d) Stripping= use with "also, too, as well".
 e) Sluicing= occurs in Interrogative Clause.
 f) Noun phrase= omission of N.P. (Subject and Object).

Syntatic Functions

INTRODUCTION →When a Subject agrees with its verb. → It can only be expressed in the form of grammatical numericals. i.e. Singular(One in Quantity) and Plural(More in Quantity).  SYNTATICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUBJECT AND VERB → Singular Subject with Singular Verb  → Plural Subject with Plural Verb  → Rules of adding 's' is different, according to the condition of sentence. SOME SYNTATIC RULES 1) Rule of Articles ® Use of double articles with double Subjects in a Sentence with conjunction 'And' → Plural Verb. E.g. The Captain and The Falcon were good Friends. ® Use of Single Article with Double Subjects taking that Singular Article common → Singular Verb. E.g. The Falcon and Captain America is very Powerful. 2) Rule of 'And' ® If Two proper Nouns are together connect with conjunction 'And', then it is manifestly  a plural verb acting over there. E.g. Shero and Soma are playing together with Ris...
