INTRODUCTION
Look around yourself. You will be amazed to find so many wonderful things in your surroundings? Have you wonder them to count one by one ?
Let suppose you have counted them and completed this task. Now someone else is asking about them. How will you describe them in your words? Will it be difficult for you? No, if they are few. But to describe each and everything, you just have to call them by their names. It is the first thing, that any person has to do while presenting / Performing his/her task in front of anyone. But why we generally use names to prefer somebody else? Is this enough for any person's identity. Can only names describe their identity? This is also a big question that can create a whirlpool in your mind. What can be the first identity of any person? How can you call it ? To answer to all these questions is only "Names". Name is only the thing that has generated the language and further statements.
In the pre homo sapiens times, they used symbols and then started the process of speaking by calling them by their names. Years spend time to time and now human is totally evolved to develop his language, skills and communication but our story was started from names. As a grammatical scientist, they used it's synonyms (similar words) as noun the theory and definition of noun has evolved from time to time by grammarians but never achieved as successful way to open the gate.
"Noun is the name of any person place or thing" (20th c.)
"Noun is the name of any person place thing or an animal". (20th c.)
"Noun is the name of any person place thing or an idea". ( 20th c.)
And so on.
There are so many definitions to describe noun but how much can you put in only a single sentence or definition it would be very difficult for grammarians to pour each and every category of this life in a single definition. There are so many names that exist in our universe. Some people have short names and some have long names like a sentence in a story. Every creature has its own identity by calling its name.
A name is not only for human rather every living organism and abiotics has a name but in terms of grammar the word name is used in different ways. Here, the purpose of the word name is to categorise people, animal and other organisms in a systematic manner. The word name is referred as "Noun" in Grammar. What are nouns in terms of grammar? Nouns are names. They are also referred to as naming words. You are already familiar with the primary definition of noun that is "Noun is the name of any person place or thing". Here our definition is mentioning only few items to describe noun. Is it correct? Is idea A noun ? Is fish also a noun? If yes, then why these are not in our primary definitions. Actually it is difficult to write all the terms together in a sentence to describe now. Therefore, these are absent in the definition of the noun. The definition of noun and its function is complex to write and understand but we can simplify the definition of the noun as
→Noun is the name of anything
→Noun is any name
→Noun is just a name
→Noun is a naming word.
By S.K. Maurya (Syntax Sc.)
The above definitions are most comfortable and easy to understand about the nature of the Noun. Here are some examples for you to understand this chapter in a simple manner-
Rishu, Soma, Shero, California, Pen, Chair, Dog, Love, Gold, Teacher, Bunch of Flowers etc.
Look at these Sentences and read the sentences that follow :
1. Soma is walking with Shero
2. The furniture is in the room.
3. The Shero is chasing the Crow.
4. Rishu is flying a kite.
In these sentences Soma and John are names of persons and Animal, Shero and Crow are names of animals and Bird , Room is the name of a place and furniture and kite and Rishu are names of things and Person. These are all names. These are Nouns.
Look at these
A Noun is the name of a person, an animal, a place or a thing.
Note
(i) All naming words are noun.
Example: Names of birds, insects, flowers, fruits, materials etc.
(ii) Words denoting feeling of heart and quality or state of human beings are also Noun. E.g Honesty, Poverty, Happiness etc.
Look around yourself wherever you are and try to make a list of more than 50 nouns in your copy. What do you find from these things? Aso try to categorise them as living and nonliving ones.
TYPES
Now after doing these activities, your concept is maybe clear. Now, there are so many nouns in our universe and made difficult to English language scientist to identify and study each and every type. For their convenience, fourth coming Grammarians had categorised noun on the basis of -
→ Nature
→ Number
→ Gender/ Sex
Here in this chapter of nominology (scientific and linguistic study of subjects) we are gonna discuss about the nature of noun through different sentences.
NATURE OF NOUNS
The nature of noun actually describe its behaviour in statements and its uses. In Grammar, Noun can behave in various ways but only 5 basic behaviour can be put forward in grammar in order to make it suitable for all the classes of subjects they are-
→ Proper Noun
→ Common Noun
→ Material Noun
→ Collective Noun
→ The Abstract Noun
Now let's try to understand each and every type separately.
PROPER NOUN
The term proper refers something systematic in a perfect manner which makes it more special in Grammar. For example, "Soma" is a kind of name or you can say any specific name which signifies a beauty or a Girl. So, it is a systematic noun or proper noun.
It it always begins with Capital letter not a new thing for us because every name begins with capital letter. "Shiro" is also a specific name which denotes the name of an animal like a dog. Similarly, "New York" is a special place.
The main objective of proper noun is to give you direction about no matter how common you are, but you are only the unique in this world. No one can be like as you are that's why we call it as proper now more examples are-
Nicki, Swati, Kitty, Saksham, Tele India, Vevo, Karbonn, Free fire, Tony, Instagram etc.
Read these given statements carefully:
1. Arham is playing Judo there.
2. Ashwini is a clever boy.
3 Japan is an Island country.
4. Nishat is reading the Qur'an
5. Honda and Suzuki are peculiar Companies.
In these sentences Ashwini is the name of a particular boy, Honda and Suzuki are the name of a particular car, Japan is the name of a particular country and the Qur'an is the name of a particular book.
E.g
Boy, car, country and book are nouns and Adarsh, Maruti, India and The Geeta are Proper Nouns.
COMMON NOUNS
When we classify a group as common or spotting various common similarities among the nominal groups, we can say that, the nature of noun can be referred as common Noun. Suppose you are sitting in your class. Now, there is more possibility that boys and girls both sit in a same class but having different rows and columns for each sex. Let girls as G and boys as B. Now,
Sex G ≠ Sex B (As having different Gender)
Their class of origin sex is totally different from each other and called as common noun
. What is common here? The common thing is that all the girls sit in the rows of girls and boys in the rows of boys, to distinguish their class. So, there is a common category for each gender in each row. Let suppose another situation where everyone is sitting together without any interference. Now in that situation it would be difficult to say them common because both gender have different sex. From the above situation, we can say that it is a common name to all the nouns and mention same class.
This means that any noun where all the other nouns exist in one is termed as common noun.
For Example- Boys, City, Girls, Cold drink, Teacher, School, Mobile Phones, Subjects etc.
A common noun is a noun that describes a type of person, thing, or place or that names a concept. Common nouns are not capitalized unless they appear at the start of a sentence, unlike proper nouns, which are always capitalized.
Common nouns include the names of different jobs, plants and animals, geographical features, ideas, objects, and many other things.
Common nouns are defined by contrast with proper nouns. That means that all nouns are either common or proper (though the same noun can be both, in different contexts).
Common nouns are general: they usually name classes of things, people, and places rather than specific things, people, and places. They are only capitalized at the start of a sentence, and they can be modified by articles, determiners, and adjectives.
Sometimes common noun and proper noun seemed very similar to each other. In that case, the proper noun (there) will be used as common noun. For example, "Soma is the Madhubala of her Class". Madhubala, name of the most beautiful heroine of all time in Bollywood cinemas, which is a proper noun can be described as common Noun to explain the captivating look of "Soma".
Similarly "Rishu is the Einstein of our Class".
So here, "Einstein", the famous Physical Scientists who gave the idea about the theory of relativity, which is a proper noun can be described as a common noun to explain the sparkling intelligence of "Rishu".
One more example "Shero is the Bruce Lee among all Dogs". "Bruce Lee", a famous Jas Chinese actor as well as a boxer , is a proper noun but here it is written as common noun in order to describe the battle skills courage and confidence of "Shero." So, this is all about the relationship between Proper Noun and Common Noun.
Look at these sentences that follow:
1. The doctor is examining Kitty.
2. The Tortoise moves slowly.
3. Rose is a beautiful flower.
4. Girls are playing in the field.
In these sentences doctor indicates a class of person, Tortoise indicates a class of animals, rose indicates a class of flower and Field indicates a class of place. So these are Common Nouns.A Common Noun is the name given to the class of person, place, animal or thing.
COLLECTIVE NOUNS
Sometimes we can't be able to refer or to say or to express various nouns in a same time having same identity. In that case, One has to use the collective nature of noun. It usually represents the noun in groups by giving them some identical names to classify them. Some of the group names are given below-
E.g. A bunch of Grapes
A Series of event
Gang, Board , School etc.
A band of musicians

In Nominology, a collective noun is a word referring to a collection of things taken as a whole. Most collective nouns in everyday speech are not specific to one kind of thing. For example, the collective noun "group" can be applied to people ("a group of people"), or dogs ("a group of dogs"), or objects ("a group of stones").
Some collective nouns are specific to one kind of thing, especially terms of venery, which identify groups of specific animals. For example, "pride" as a term of venery always refers to lions, never to dogs or cows. Other examples come from popular culture such as a group of owls, which is called a "parliament".
Different forms of English handle verb agreement with collective count nouns differently. For example, users of British English generally accept that collective nouns take either singular or plural verb forms depending on context and the metonymic shift that it implies.
Two examples of collective nouns are "team" and "government", which are both words referring to groups of (usually) people. Both "team" and "government" are countable nouns (consider: "one team", "two teams", "most teams"; "one government", "two governments", "many governments").
Sometimes the collective nature of noun describes various grammatical components in plurals sense and that sense of noun can be referred as "Multitude of Noun" or "Noun Multitude". It can also be said or written as "Multiplicative Noun", because it contains numbers, quantitative units and describes the Numeral Nouns. This is all about the collective nature of Noun.
E.g British Army is very Powerful.
Here, there is the use of Collective Nature of Noun.
British Army are taking their meal.
Here, there is Multiplicative Nature of Noun.
Now the next one is Material Noun.
MATERIAL NOUN
Have you wonder how your shirt is made? What has been used to create this shirt? To this situation, you will answer, "Maybe some different kind of fibre or material". Yes, this fibre is also a different kind of material.
One more example, is that what has been used for the creation of your "School Bench"? What material has been used to create that School bench? Have you wondered about the various materials that exist around you?And how are these materials used to create various objects or useful resources which gives satisfaction or have utility in our life? That is "School Bench" is made up of wood or you can say that iron because in many schools, The school benches are made up of wood and some of them are made up of iron. So we can say that the material used for creating a bench is either a Wood or an Iron. Similarly, "The Book" which you read for your further studies and for scoring good marks in your exams is also made up of some kind of material and that material is "Paper". So, we can say that, "Those nouns which are used to create other nouns are referred to as the Material Noun".
For example, "I have a Jewellery made up of Gold".
So, here "Gold" is that item which has been used to create that Jewellery.
"I have a silver pen"
So, "Silver", is also that particular thing which has been used to create that Pen.
One more example, "I have an aluminum vessel".
So, that Vessel is made up of Aluminum.
So, all these are materials that's why these are referred to as "Material Nouns" because they are used to create other Nouns. They don't have their own identity in sense.
For example, I'm saying that I have a golden key Ring. So, that key Ring is made up of Gold. But if I say that I have gold so what is the sense of that thing? It makes senseless because gold is nothing it just a material. You can create something from that Gold. Similarly, the Iron or which is found in various ecological inches and spotted in various geo mines is nothing in its own but can be used to create various materials of our daily life. So all these are material Nouns. This is all about the material now.
Try to find various material Nouns in your surrounding and make a list of them. Also try to make list of Proper, Common and Material Nouns in order to understand the relationships and difference among them.
Look at these pictures and read the sentences that follow:
1. Black Panther's suit is made up of Vibranium
2. The Pant is made up of cloth.
3. I do not like Sugar.
4. The Chair is made of Steel.
In these sentences Vibranium, Cloth, Sugar and Steel are names of substances (materials). They can be measured or weighed. These are Material Nouns. A Material Noun is the name of a substance which can be measured or weighed.
ABSTRACT NOUN
The most important thing in one's life is to control upon his or her feelings because feeling control is just like an addiction to control. Suppose someone else has fallen in love with somebody else and in that case, it will be very difficult for that boy or that girl to control over his/her feelings. In that situation, He/She has to adjust or to control upon his/her emotions for that particular Person in front of him or her. So, this is a kind of feeling. Similarly, you have nothing to eat. In that case, you will feel hungry and after some time you will find yourself that you are killing by starvation. So, this is also a kind of feeling. One more example, no matter how good you are but there is always one person who hates you for no Reason. Here, it is also a kind of feeling. Suppose that you want to do something different from others but others are forcing you to that thing. So, in that case, you will feel angry. You will scold upon those persons who are forcing you to do that thing. So, "angry" is also kind of feeling. So, All these feelings or you can say that those nouns which you feelings of Anything are referred to as that Abstract Noun.
Look at these sentences that follow :
1. The Man showed his Cruelness.
2. Honesty is the best policy.
3. I like her Love.
4. Look that beauty in Black Saree.
In these sentences Cruelness, beauty, honesty and Love show human quality, feeling or state. These are Abstract Nouns
An Abstract Noun is the name of a word which indicates quality, feeling or state of a person or thing. We can not see or touch an Abstract Noun. We can only feel or think about it.
