Dependent Clauses

EXERCISE 1 

Each sentence contains either an adjective clause of place or an adverb clause of place. Your task is to identify the type: Is the underlined clause an adverb clause or an adjective clause?

1) I go hiking where the forests are dense.

2) I visited the town where my aunt lives.

3) He walked where the path was muddy.

4) This is the school where I first learned English.

5) The cat sleeps where the sunlight falls.

6) We reached the place where they filmed the movie.

7) I go wherever I find peace.

8) She likes the cafe where they serve Italian coffee.

9) He stood where the view was perfect.

10) That’s the temple where Buddha meditated.

11) They live where the mountains meet the sky.

12) The garden where he grows roses is lovely.

13) He ran where the others were running.

14) We visited the palace where the queen once lived.

15) You may sit wherever you feel comfortable.

16) I remember the restaurant where we had our first date.

17) Let’s build the camp where the ground is flat.

18) She dreams of the island where her ancestors lived.

19) He parked his car where there was some shade.

20) This is the field where the final match was played.

21) Stand where the microphone can pick up your voice.

22) The village where my father was born is in Nepal.

23) We stopped the car where the road was broken.

24) That’s the building where I used to work.

25) Stay where I can see you.

26) The hill where they planted trees is now green.

27) Walk where the signs direct you.

28) I saw the gallery where his paintings are displayed.

29) Sit where the wind can’t reach you.

30 ) The room where the guests waited is at the end of the hall.


EXERCISE 2 

Identify the type of clause 

1. People who pay their debts are trusted.

2. We cannot go while it is snowing.

3. Raj thinks that I have made a mistake.

4. Tina bought some chocolates which she wanted to give her brother.

5. After I reached home, it started raining.

6. Mani was asked to come to the office though he was not keeping well.

7. All that glitters is not gold.

8. Tim is the nicest person I’ve ever met.

9. She did not go to school as she was sick.

10. This is the boy who got suspended last week.

11. Although I was not in the mood for a movie, I watched ‘Miracle in Cell No. 7’ with my friend.

12. Olena likes stories that have fairies in them.

13. Riya was sure that Tia would come today.

14. Nobody knew who had come first in the race.

15. The teacher gave the students another worksheet as soon as they completed the first one.


EXERCISE 3 (HOTS) 

Identify the type of clauses

1) I believe that she is honest.

2) He went to the city where his uncle lives.

3) We rested where the air was cooler.

4) She knows why he left early.

5) I found the book which you had lost.

6) They behaved as if they owned the place.

7) He replied that he was not interested.

8) This is the house that Jack built.

9) You can come whenever you are ready.

10) Tell me what you really think.

11) The reason why I called you is urgent.

12) He works wherever they send him.

13) She told me where the documents were.

14) That’s the café where they first met.

15) He acts as though he knows everything.

16) We don’t understand how the machine works.

17) She ignored the man who was shouting at her.

18) Please explain why you skipped the class.

19) I remember the day when we first met.

20) Do you know who called last night?

21) He marked the trail where the leaves stopped rustling.

22) You should never sit where the elders usually sit.

23) The alley where she whispered her secrets is no longer there.

24) I returned where I had last seen the footprints.

25) That was the corridor where the strange noise came from.

26) They were trapped where the canyon narrows sharply.

27) We painted the wall where the cracks were visible.

28) She described a village where people sleep during the day.

29) I couldn’t stay where every sound echoed back twice.

30) This is not the station where we got off yesterday.

Syntatic Functions

INTRODUCTION →When a Subject agrees with its verb. → It can only be expressed in the form of grammatical numericals. i.e. Singular(One in Quantity) and Plural(More in Quantity).  SYNTATICAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SUBJECT AND VERB → Singular Subject with Singular Verb  → Plural Subject with Plural Verb  → Rules of adding 's' is different, according to the condition of sentence. SOME SYNTATIC RULES 1) Rule of Articles ® Use of double articles with double Subjects in a Sentence with conjunction 'And' → Plural Verb. E.g. The Captain and The Falcon were good Friends. ® Use of Single Article with Double Subjects taking that Singular Article common → Singular Verb. E.g. The Falcon and Captain America is very Powerful. 2) Rule of 'And' ® If Two proper Nouns are together connect with conjunction 'And', then it is manifestly  a plural verb acting over there. E.g.
